Three-Ants

Ant Exterminator

As pests go, ants are likely one of the most annoying. There is a sense of having your home and privacy invaded when you see them marching in lines across your kitchen floor or counters. Suddenly, nothing in your home feels safe from their invasion. The good news is pest control can be extremely helpful in ridding your home of these tiny pests and returning it to the haven it is supposed to be.

Ants In West Virginia

There have been 27 different species of ants identified in our state. Most of them are not frequently seen in homes as pests, except for the Carpenter Ant and the Odorous House Ant. With so many varied ants species, it’s best to leave the identification to the professionals. Different types of ants may require individual treatment approaches. Call Enviro-Tech Pest Services right away if you notice them in your home.

Damage Ants Cause

Although they may seem small and unassuming, specific types do have the ability to cause damage to your home. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, one of the species with the most potential to do damage found in West Virginia is the Carpenter Ant.

Carpenter Ants work similarly to termites when it comes to home damage. They build their nests in wood in nature, and if they infest your home, they are naturally drawn to the wood in the structure of a building. While typically attracted to damaged or moist wood, they have strong, powerful jaws capable of hollowing out even solid wood. Once inside, they use the space to hatch their eggs, continuing the cycle of damage to your home. Once the structure is damaged, other pests are apt to invade. They leave infestation signs - like piles of wood shavings that resemble sawdust and new, small openings. Millions of dollars are spent annually trying to control them and even more to fix the damage they cause.

Interesting Ant Facts

They march in lines and seem to be able to find the food source they’re looking for because they leave chemical trails behind. They use pheromones to mark their path, which they follow with their antennae (since ants don’t have noses). The good news is, they only live in the Amazon, so we’re safe here in West Virginia. There are also more than 12,000 species worldwide, and some can fly. The United States is home to around 700 of those species. An ant that is said to have the most painful sting in the entire bug world is the Bullet Ant. Its sting is said to be similarly painful to being hit with a bullet.
