Rodents

Can we take a minute to talk about rodents? No, not the cute furry ones you keep as pets, but the ones that infest and contaminate your home. Here at Enviro-Tech Pest Services, we strive to help our customers live in a rodent-free environment. Without taking proper control of your rodent problem quickly, one pair of rats or mice can grow into a giant infestation.

Mice are curious critters that enjoy exploring new things. They build their nests with scraps of material they harvest in their travels and hide in quiet areas within your home. There are quite a few of us that have been startled by a mouse when opening a previously stored box. They can burrow in your home’s insulation, creating a biohazard with their droppings. They are nocturnal and prefer to eat seeds, grains, and fruits. However, if given a chance, mice will eat just about anything in your pantry, and contaminate whatever they touch. They also reproduce at impressive speeds. One mouse will have an average of 6-8 babies a litter and can have up to 10 litters in a year. Those babies can get pregnant around six weeks of age. Then 19-21 days later, a new litter is born. You see how this could quickly get out of hand.

Rats tend to be cautious and investigative when encountering something new in their path. Instead of nesting above ground, they like to burrow. They tuck themselves beneath a quiet corner of a building or buried behind some undisturbed hedges. Rats are also nocturnal with poor eyesight and a strong sense of smell and they primarily eat grains and meat. However, they will eat anything they can find including garbage and even each other at times. They can climb for a meal as the pads on their feet are textured in a way that helps them grip textured surfaces with ease.

A female starts breeding around three months old and can have up to 12 pups a litter. While rats reproduce slower than mice, they have more babies at once. You can see that leaving them unmanaged is a massive problem in the making.

Both can cause damage to your home. They gnaw through insulation and wires, which can create a fire risk. They will chew through boxes destroying their contents, including clothes, heirlooms, or important paperwork.

We know that rats were responsible for spreading the plague through Europe in the 1300s through the fleas they carried. They still have that reputation to this day, and it is not unfounded. According to the Centers for Disease Control, mice and rats carry up to 35 diseases that can spread to humans by direct or indirect contact.
