The Clay Center is the jewel in the city’s cultural crown, hosting musical performances and featuring a hands-on art museum, planetarium, theater, and traveling exhibitions.

Charleston has a long and storied history, beginning in the seventeen hundreds. The first settlement in the area, Fort Lee, was built in 1787, and Colonel Savannah Clendenin of the Virginia Rangers is credited with its founding. It’s believed that the city is named after Charles Clendenin, the Colonel’s father. The town was originally part of the state of Virginia. However, during the Civil War, when Virginia seceded, much of the area was still under Union control, which ultimately led to the formation of a new state: West Virginia. Charleston would become the capital and would continue to grow over the years, thanks to industries like glass, steel, and timber, and eventually and, most importantly, coal. The city has had its economic ups and downs over the decades, but beginning in the late 1980s, it began a concentrated effort to revive the downtown area. Today, the area is thriving and offers its residents an excellent quality of life while appealing to visitors worldwide.
